[Configuration] Optimizing Number of SSIDs

Service Set Identifier or “SSID” is the name of the wireless network. SSID allows users or devices to connect to the desired network when multiple independent networks operate in the same physical area.

Description:

Service Set Identifier or “SSID” is the name of the wireless network. SSID allows users or devices to connect to the desired network when multiple independent networks operate in the same physical area.

Investigation:

Using the WiFiScanner, a user can check how many SSIDs each network has. Too many SSIDs per access point can cause unnecessary overhead due the number of beacon announcements versus actual user traffic on wireless network.

Mitigation:

Limit the number of SSIDs per network. A typical wireless network should have have 1-4 SSIDs per band max but less is better. Check and confirm the appropriate amount of SSIDs your network is supposed to have.

Solution:

Use the minimum number of SSIDs possible.
